Hereford Road in the Bayswater area of London is the brain child of Tom Pendleton, a former chef from the well-known St. John Bread and Wine Restaurant where the boast is that no part of an animal is ever wasted! Great for those of you who like offal etc.!
The restaurant is housed in an old Victorian butcher’s shop, with in front a working open kitchen which is used in winter. The dining room is unassuming but welcoming and spacious, and the accent is on traditional English dishes at reasonable prices. Once again we settled for the fixed price lunch menu as it was really good value for money – smoked eel or ham and egg pie, steak and chips, lamb salad or slow-cooked leg of duck, followed by a serious chocolate dessert or traditional rice pudding with jam, which was so good. The price was £13 for 2 courses or £15.50 for three courses.
The a la carte menu includes such English classics as Dover sole, lamb’s kidneys, rabbit pot roast or braised oxtail , with potted crab and deep fried haddock as some of the attractive starters. Traditional Bakewell Tart or Buttermilk pudding featured on the dessert menu. Starters are about $6 , main courses £14 and desserts £6.
There is a short but interesting wine list featuring wines only from the Old World , with the emphasis on wine by the glass or in carafes , all at reasonable prices.
If you’re a lover of traditional English food this is definitely the place for you!
