There are also a number of small fishing harbours on the outskirts of Marseilles and one of them is La Madrague, where Chez Aldo is definitely the most popular restaurant. We went there on a Saturday lunchtime and the very large room, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea, was absolutely packed with locals and a few tourists.Chez Aldo is of course another restaurant specialising in fish – but their speciality is “wild” fish i.e. not farm-raised, which is grilled on a wooden fire. That day there was sea bass, sea bream and turbot available, but the prices per 100 gram were very steep and we settled for a Parillada, which is a selection of fish cooked on the grill served with peppers and tomatoes, and grilled gambas. Another very popular dish is mussels served in a multitude of guises – with cream and white wine, with roquefort cheese, with curry etc. etc. The prices for all the dishes, apart from the special fish, ranged from Euros 13 to Euros 19, followed by a dessert menu which included tiramisu, chocolate fondant and the apparently famous Aldo lemon sorbet at Euros 8.
An excellent family restaurant, with Aldo himself visiting each table to make sure everything was in order!
