The Shed advertises itself as a Fish and Chip bistro serving only local fresh fish and seafood so it is already distancing itself from the run of the mill fish and chip establishments. It is located at the end of a winding country lane on the harbourside of Porthgain, a little village in South Wales and has made quite a name for itself not only locally but also farther afield. I heard about it from people in London who had just eaten there and were singing its praises. And having now been there twice (my sister lives about 10 minutes away so I have a reason to go down to Wales !) I agree with them. A lot of the fish is caught by the owners and there is wide choice of varieties, including lesser known ones such as ling , coley and pollock, and delicious local lobster. As well as the traditional fish and chips there are several other more sophisticated dishes to be sampled. Good fish soups to start with and lots of puddings – all very English, and served by young, friendly staff. The prices are rather expensive for the area – the main courses are between £14 and £17 and the prices on the wine list are also up there too, but there are lots of Welsh beers you can try instead! In the summer you can sit outside in front of the harbour and have brunch, sandwiches or tea, and however you choose to go it is a very pleasant experience. If the weather is good there are fabulous sandy beaches such as Broadhaven close by, and in any weather the Welsh scenery and sights like the cathedral at nearby St. David’s are well worth the trip.
