The Roux brothers have been stars on the London Restaurant scene for over 25 years but they continue to make their mark. Their most recent contribution is Roux at the Landau, located in the Langham hotel in the heart of London just off Regent Street . It is a new collaboration between Albert Roux and his son, Michel and they have installed Chris King as the chef. For five years he was the chef de cuisine at La Gavroche, the Roux flagship restaurant which was the first restaurant in the UK to win, 1 then 2 and finally 3 Michelin Stars . It has recently reopened after the fitting of new kitchens, and will doubtless continue to be one of the most sought after restaurant destinations in London. But Roux at the Landau is out to give it a run for its money.

The Landau Hotel is elegant and luxurious – and the restaurant is in the same vein. Chris King concentrates on classically constructed French dishes blended with a modern approach , together with superb service and a beautiful décor.

All this, as usual, does not come cheaply, but there has been an effort made e to attract customers to this new venture and there are special offers for 2 and 3 course meals at specific times for both lunch and dinner at £27 and £35 respectively, each accompanied by a glass of champagne.

I chose the 3 course menu, which as an amuse bouche had a soft goat cheese salad, followed by chestnut soup, and confit de canard with roasted red peppers and black olive sauce.

My friends had sautéed prawns and fillet of sea bass on a rosti patty, with baby broad beans and peas – all of which were most satisfactory and beautifully presented. The dessert, a sorbet accompanied by a chocolate croquant biscuit, was not my favourite, but you can’t win them all!

In addition to a classic and extensive wine list, Albert Roux imports regional wine under his own label and naturally we chose one from Languedoc – Roussillon, a fruity red from Sommieres in the Gard, with a price we could handle.

This is a somewhat formal restaurant, probably best kept for special occasions, but well worth trying. And the flowers in the hotel lobby and in the restaurant are breathtaking!
